One of the most fascinating preservations stories we've encountered this year is that of the Hutchinson House. Located on South Carolina's Edisto Island, the Hutchinson House is an architectural legacy to the hard work and triumph of Black freedpeople after the Civil War. Built by hand by Henry Hutchinson, the Hutchinson House weathered years of environmental struggles, sheltered generations of family members, and is now in the process of being restored to it's original glory. Read more about the history of the home and current preservation efforts in this article from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. ... See MoreSee Less

Nina Simone's legacy is one of music and activism, and now her childhood home - a three-room clapboard house in Tryon, NC - has been saved. National Trust Chief Preservation Officer Katherine Malone-France noted, “Nina Simone - legendary musician, social justice champion, and global inspiration – defied constraints placed on Black female performers in the mid-twentieth century to become the voice of civil rights. In order to honor and carry forward her extraordinary legacy, a group of visionary artists and preservationists have collaborated to demonstrate our commitment to equity and racial justice by protecting an American landmark in perpetuity and ensuring that Simone’s unique voice continues to inspire and empower people through her childhood home.” Read all about Simone's legacy, home, and the people who saved it in this inspiring article from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. ...
