Elisabeth Sherman Brackett was born in Wilton, New York on June 29th, 1825. Her parents were Sylvanus and Clara Sherman. In 1846, she married William Brackett. William built railroad bridges, and his job required that the couple traveled often. In 1857, William had an accident in Iowa, and the Bracketts decided it would be wise to settle there while William healed. In 1860, the Bracketts moved from Ely to Mount Vernon, and two years later they built Brackett House. Elisabeth and William had three children: Anna, Edgar, and Clara. Elisabeth was an active member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She died February 10th, 1899.
