The 1857 Col. John Q and Rowena Camp home at 113 2nd Ave NW (now home to Alice's Wonderland) was added to the National Register of Historic Places along with 11 other brick homes in 2020. It was built by local builders Henry and William Albright of locally-made brick and locally-quarried limestone for the Wilds family. John, who became wealthy from his Mount Vernon General Store and a Marion steam mill, he enlisted with the Iowa Regiment Company A in 1861 and was fatally wounded in battle. UPDATE: The memorial service for Leah will be Sat Sept. 24 at 11AM at Stewart Baxter Funeral and Memorial Services in Mount Vernon.The Mount Vernon Historic Preservation Commission is very sorry to announce the passing on Sept. 6 of our longtime Chair and beloved colleague Leah Rogers. Leah received a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from the University of Missouri and a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Michigan State University. Leah and her husband Clark Rogers worked on archaeology projects in 6 states and all over the state of Iowa. The Rogers moved to Mount Vernon in 1992, and Leah began service on the MVHPC shortly after that. In her work with her firm, Tallgrass Archaeology, and in previous assignments Leah completed over 70 nominations of various properties and sites to the National Register of Historic Places. She served as Chair of the Association of Iowa Archaeologists. Tallgrass Archaeology has been purchased by a longtime colleague of Leah's who now also provides a home for Leah's constant companion Buddy. We will miss you Leah! ... See MoreSee Less
