One of the most fascinating preservations stories we've encountered this year is that of the Hutchinson House. Located on South Carolina's Edisto Island, the Hutchinson House is an architectural legacy to the hard work and triumph of Black freedpeople after the Civil War. Nina Simone's legacy is one of music and activism, and now her childhood home - a three-room clapboard house in Tryon, NC - has been saved. National Trust Chief Preservation Officer Katherine Malone-France noted, “Nina Simone - legendary musician, social justice champion, and global inspiration – defied constraints placed on Black female performers in the mid-twentieth century to become the voice of civil rights.
