Mary Jane Yount Shantz was born in Hendricks County, Indiana on February 18th, 1845. In 1850 her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Braxton Yount, moved the family to Martelle. The family later moved to Mount Vernon. Mary Jane married Martin Luther Shantz in 1867. The pair had four children: Geneva, Nellie, Harry, and Adelbert. She was known for her generosity and allowed Cornell students to board at the Shantz home. She died March 16th, 1917.
